Step 1: Divide. Look at the first digit of 144, which is 1. Can 6 go into 1? No, so look at the first two digits: 14. How many times does 6 go into 14? It goes 2 times (because 6 × 2 = 12, and 6 × 3 = 18, which is too big). Write the 2 above the 4 in the dividend.

Step 2: Multiply. Multiply your answer (2) by the divisor (6). 2 × 6 = 12. Write 12 below the 14.

Step 3: Subtract. Subtract 12 from 14. 14 - 12 = 2. Write 2 below the line.

Step 4: Bring down. Bring down the next digit from the dividend, which is 4. Write it next to the 2, so now you have 24.

Step 5: Repeat. Go back to step 1. How many times does 6 go into 24? It goes 4 times (6 × 4 = 24). Write the 4 above the second 4 in the dividend. Multiply: 4 × 6 = 24. Subtract: 24 - 24 = 0. There are no more digits to bring down, so you’re done.

The answer is 24. You can check it by multiplying: 24 × 6 = 144.

How to practice long division at home

Long division gets easier with repetition, but the repetition has to be the right kind. A few ideas:

  • Start with problems that divide evenly (no remainders) and use small divisors like 3, 4, or 5. Once those feel automatic, add remainders and bigger divisors.
  • Work one problem together, then have your child narrate the next one to you. Saying the steps out loud makes them stick.
  • Use real division scenarios: splitting a bag of 48 candies among 6 friends, figuring out how many weeks are in 365 days, or dividing a recipe.
  • Keep it short. Three problems a day beats ten problems once a week. Five to ten minutes of focused practice is enough.

When your child makes a mistake, don’t point it out right away. Ask ‘What’s the next step?’ and let them catch it themselves. That pause is where the learning happens.

What about remainders?

Once your child can do long division with problems that divide evenly, introduce remainders. A remainder is what’s left over when the divisor doesn’t go into the dividend an exact number of times.

Take 145 ÷ 6. You work through the same steps and get 24, but after you bring down the 5 and subtract, you’re left with 1. Since there are no more digits to bring down and 6 doesn’t go into 1, that 1 is the remainder. You write the answer as 24 R1 or 24 remainder 1.

In 5th grade, kids learn to express remainders as fractions (24 and 1/6) or decimals (24.166…), but in 4th grade, writing R1 is enough.

Your child is ready to move on when they can:

  • Divide a three-digit or four-digit number by a one-digit divisor without help.
